Donegal County Museum was first opened to the public in 1987. In the first phase of development, the museum was housed in what was once the Wardens house of Letterkennys workhouse, built in 1843. The museum now contains two galleries, a workshop, a storage area nad offices. The museum has a workshop and storage facility where artefacts are preserved under appropriate environmental conditions. Donegal County Museum seeks to preserve the inheritance of the people of Donegal for present and future generations by collecting, recording, preserving, communicating and displaying for the use and enjoyment of the widest possible audience, the material evidence and associated information of the countys heritage. By doing so it aims to enrich the lives and sense of identity of every person in the county. Donegal County Museum has two exhibition galleries. Temporary exhibitions are held all year round in the ground floor gallery. The first floor gallery contains a permanent exhibition which tells the story of Co.Donegal from the mesolithic to the medeival and of the people places and events from the penal times, through the famine and the land war to world war one and the emergency.
