Ionad Teampall Cróine the former Church of St. Peter's in Dungloe was erected on the site of an earlier building dating back to 1760, which was constructed in the penal years. It is a strong secure building and although added to and improved from time to time, in truth, it is the same building that was opened for public worship on the 3rd of March 1856.
The local people built the church on a voluntary basis. The priest in Dungloe at the time was Fr. John O'Donnell, who would proceed to the hill in Tubberkeen and blow a whistle to call on the volunteer workers. Local granite stone was used in the building of the church which originally has a clay floor. Sand was transported from Maghery and Loughbarra near Doochary to make the mortar, while timber beams used on the roof were salvaged from a shipwreck found behind Inis Caorach Island. The ship was called "The Forest Monarch". In later years Henry Glackin from Cleendra constructed new middle floors and a middle gallery and later two side galleries were added to the building.
A year later a bell was erected on the grounds of the church. The bell was manufactured in Dublin in 1856 and transported from Dublin to Derry where John Boyle later took it by horse and cart to Dungloe. The Donnelly family was for years responsible for ringing the bell at the various times. The last Mass was celebrated on the 14th of August 1980.
To mark the new Millennium the bell was restored to its original condition and at a special Ceremony on the eve of the Millennium the bell was rung from its original position outside the old St. Peter's Church now named Ionad Teampall Cróine. Currently the bell rings at 12 mid-day and 6p.m. signifying a time for reflection for the busy people from the town Dungloe
