On the shore of Lough Swilly near Manorcunningham stand the ruins of an old abbey. As described in Maguire’s ‘History of the Diocese of Raphoe’ ,The general belief is that the
Balleighan Abbey was founded by Hugh Dubh O’Donnell in the beginning of the sixteenth century and it was associated with Kilmacrenan Franciscan Friary.
