For those interested in our rich military history, why not visit the museum at Fort Dunree, in its magnificent setting on the cliff top at the entrance to Lough Swilly and 12km north of Buncrana. See the breathtaking Stone structure at Grianagh an Aileach, the seat of High Kings, at Burt.
In Donegal Town the castle built by the O'Donnell chieftain in the 15th century overlooks the Eske River. The restored castle is furnished throughout and includes Persian rugs and French tapestries. Daily guided tours.
At Churchill the Glebe House & Gallery Regency House, 1828, is set in woodland gardens, decorated with William Morris textiles, Islamic and Japanese art etc. The collection includes 300 works by leading 20th century artists; Picasso, Kokoshka as well as Irish and Italian artists.
Newmills Corn and Flax Mills, near Letterkenny, is an interesting reminder of a stage in the industrial development of this country. The visitor to Newmills can experience the pleasure of seeing one of the largest waterwheels in Ireland in action as it drives the corn mill.
Parts of Donegal’s rich archaeological, literary and cultural heritage can be viewed while walking the many heritage and town trails. Many are signposted along the way with historical facts and folklore. The choice is yours: Coastal Walks, Looped Walks, Waymarked Ways, Heritage and Town Trails.
Our Irish language – Gaelic - is strong in the many Gaeltacht regions, particularly in West Donegal. There and throughout the county you will receive a warm welcome to music, song and dance sessions. You can visit the birthplace of Clannad, the Daniel O’Donnell Visitors Centre in Dungloe, or see the impressive sculpture of rock legend, Rory Gallagher, in Ballyshannon.
