Located about 8km from Glenties on the N56 Portnoo Road with directional signs on route the Bonny Glen Wood is an area of great natural beauty accessible all year round. Formerly part of the 'Porter Estate' owned by a local magistrate who, it is said, acquired the lands in return for paying the passage to America, during the Famine, of the seven families who lived there. Bonny Glen Lough and several smaller lakes are at the centre of the wood. Enjoy the peace and quiet and observe the wide variety of animals and birds, the most well-known being the local heron colony of up to 15 nests. Picnic sites and seats are located throughout. Trails are from 1km (Bonny Glen Loop) to 3km (Namanlagh Walk) or as you please.
