From Glencolumbkille a road heads inland towards Ardara, through the wild and picturesque Glengesh Pass where the road meanders through sloping mountainous terrain. Glengesh (Gleann geis, Glen of the Swans) is one of two glaciated valleys that sculpture the northern edge of the Banagh peninsula. The steeply plunging flank of Common Mountain (503m/1,653ft) on the glen’s south side shows to advantage on the N56 approach road from Glenties. The glen carries the road between Ardara and Carrick to a height of 270m/900ft over Glengesh Pass via a couple of hairpin bends. Glengesh Pass is a high pass with an elevated window on Loughros Beg Bay, exquisitely framed between the steep-sided Glengesh and Mulmosog mountains.
